What Do An NBA Player And A Concert Pianist Have In Common?

temp-post-image

While their two worlds may never traditionally collide, an NBA player shares more in common with a high-level concert pianist than with a typical basketball fan. The same common ground exists between a Delta Force operator and a chef of a Michelin 3-star restaurant, or an elite Formula 1 driver and an author of a literary classic.

Excellence, and all that entails its pursuit, is a highly transferable skill. And while a professional pianist likely won't be able to step onto the basketball court and play ball with any expertise, the shared qualities of commitment, grit, and focus are so foundational to all practices of excellence that they outweigh any innate physical capacities.

Everything you do trains these qualities, for better or worse. While it may be impractical to commit yourself to the highest tier of excellence in every job, hobby, and commitment you undertake, the lines between all practices are blurred. Movement in yourself is universal and directional, not subject-specific. If you're going to do something, do it well!
