“Human beings need three basic things in order to be content: they need to feel competent at what they do; they need to feel authentic in their lives; and they need to feel connected to others. These values are considered "intrinsic" to human happiness and far outweigh "extrinsic" values such as beauty, money and status.”

Sebastian Junger, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging

If you’ve attended our gym a handful of times, you might have noticed that many of the members of CrossFit No Boundaries are interested in a bit more than getting a workout in. While fitness is undeniably our primary goal, it’s not uncommon to catch people hanging out after class to get some quality time in with their workout buddies. In fact, we like spending time together so much that we started looking for ways to connect outside the gym. There are several examples of this, but one of the most recent is our CFNB Book Club, which meets every few months to socialize and discuss a book relevant to the interests of our members.

The book selection this time is Sebastian Junger’s Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging. So far it’s shaped up to be a perfect tool to illustrate what we think makes our gym special. Human beings, Junger asserts, need to feel competent, authentic, and connected to others. It’s not a stretch to see how getting to the gym and finding (and competing with) your workout buddies can quickly lead to an fulfillment of all three of these needs.

As Junger points out, human beings are hard-wired with the need to belong and be a part of a “tribe.” At CFNB, we take that idea seriously. If you’re looking for your “people,” come check us out. We want you to be a part of our tribe.

We also want you to be a part of our book club! It’s meant to be a low-pressure, high-enjoyment gathering with stimulating conversation and the opportunity to share your thoughts and reactions. No degrees in English Literature required--in fact, even if you’ve only read part of the book, or just the synopsis, we want you there. You never know what you might learn! You might even realize you’ve found the tribe you’ve been searching for all along.

Our next book club gathering will take place on Sunday, August 26th, from 4-7 pm. Join us for socializing, bonding, and a little bit of mental training to inspire your fitness routine.
