The Forty Year Overnight Success


While media -- social or otherwise -- may lead you to think otherwise, the fact of the matter is overnight success is a fairy tale. What may appear to be an overnight success is in fact the culmination of years, often decades, of continued effort towards a goal. We’ll call this the “forty year overnight success.”

The “overnight” element of it all is what happens when you view others’ success from an outsiders lens. You see where they are now (successful), and you notice that they didn’t seem to be there a very short time ago. This view is, of course, obscured by the fact that you’re far removed from their process and only seeing their results, but that part of the story doesn’t usually make the front pages. It doesn’t help, either, that immediate gratification and shortcuts sell, regardless of how true they are, and so we continue to feed the beast.

While it may be disappointing to hear that there’s no magic formula to rocket you into success by tomorrow, you can take solace in the fact that we’re all playing the same game. Your success idles are where they are not because they have something secret that you don’t have, but because they’ve put in their time being continually dedicated to the practice. And you can, too.
