When you sit down to play a rousing game of Monopoly with your friends, I am guessing that you follow all the rules. Hopefully this rule-following comes from a place of integrity, but it’s okay to own the fact that it’s a lot easier to follow the rules when the other players are watching and playing the game with you. Rule-following (and rule-breaking) loves company, after all.
Now what about when the game is only in your head? What about when there’s no one else standing by to enforce the rules, to call you out if you falter, or even playing the same game with you? How well do you follow the rules when the rules are yours and yours only, and the only person left to enforce the rules and suffer the consequences is you?
More than likely, not as well.
The good news is, you don’t have to be the only one playing the proverbial game. The success of our community is largely based on the shared accountability that comes from a group of like-minded individuals sharing in the same pursuit. How can you tap on the resources of your community to help hold you to the standards you want in your life? And how can you contribute to the success of your community members by upholding standards of excellence around you? We are all in this together, whether we act like it or not. Let’s act like it!
