Remember when you would pick up whatever ball was on the playground and start a game. There were a variety of activities for you to play. You would start with whatever was closest and pick up different games as time went on. Sometimes kids would get bored and decided to leave for another game. Regardless of the activity play would continue.
Kids will play anything, just to play. This weekend I watched as kids old and young all played a game of touch rugby at Liberty Park. The local San Clemente Rugby Club, the SC Gators, were meeting for this year's club registration and a BBQ. There were rugby balls everywhere and kids that had no experience were running up and giving it a go. Makes me wonder where in life we lost the desire to just pick up and play?
You can see the same scenario in gymnastics gyms everywhere, without any direction or rules, children will begin tumbling and jumping. You can even see it here at CrossFit No Boundaries guests walk in and immediately start swinging from the rings. I found myself wondering about all this as I watched my own two boys who have little to no knowledge of rugby, start "playing" all on their own this weekend.
Then I looked at their smiles and heard their laughter and was reminded of the "why."
It's fun...running, jumping, tackling, throwing are all fun things to do. You don't need to think about it, you can just do it and immediately feel good about it. Just ask our softball players or our soccer players, I imagine they will tell you the same thing. It's good old fashioned fun!!!
So the next time someone asks you why do you workout so much, why do you run or says something like, "that seems like a lot of work." Maybe you should take a minute to remember that this is fun and you are privy to one of the best kept secrets of life. Don't be afraid to share that secret either. Don't be afraid to imagine a world where everyone stops "work" to play a "game."
Seriously, can you imagine how much stress relief people would experience. Mandatory breaks for play would rejuvenate an entire population. Dare to think of the impacts on that population...dare to dream of the possibilities.
Start a game today. It doesn't have to be a traditional game and you most definitely don't need any fancy equipment. Make up a game if you have to. Start a handstand contest, challenge someone to a wheelbarrow race or just play some catch. Invite a few people to play and watch as everyone begins to smile and laugh...it's infectious.
Be infectious and start a movement today!
