Needed a vacation from your vacation?
I have heard this is a pretty common condition from folks with kids.
I returned from our Aspen mountain vacation yesterday and I am ready for a few more days of R&R. While my training more than prepared me for our snowboarding and ski adventures, it did not prepare me for being in the elements, at elevation for seven full days. We had one rest day outside of our travel days.
Don't get me wrong, you'll find no complaining here, this is exactly what I signed up for. Being in good condition, physically, allowed me to do this with relative ease. I'm not the squat record holder and I'm not going to make it to the CrossFit Games Super Regional...but my fitness allowed me to push through lots of snow, ice and wind this last week.
Even though there was no lack of exercise, I did come across a few unexpected challenges that I was unprepared for. The biggest was the ego check I received, watching my seven year old bomb mountains and show extraordinary moxie when we went cross country skiing. It's a tough realization that someone 33years younger is already getting ready to surpass your own ability level. The second realization was that even though I have been working hard on my weaknesses I still have a lot of work to do. My obliques, glutes and hamstrings still struggled to get running after a few days...while my mind was ready and willing I didn't have the motor control I was searching for after a few days. My performance slowed to a snails pace and I was forced to deal with the fact that I still have significant deficiencies to deal with.
The point of all this is that although I have been training for this event and even focused on my significant motor control issues...I still wore myself down to the same old problems I struggle with in my training. The fight can seem uphill at times, but despite the outcome I can't help but think of how well I was prepared because of the CrossFit, Strongman, Gymnastics and Powerlifting I incorporate into my weekly training.
I'm back till the next big adventure and look forward to the challenge of facing our weaknesses together.
