Dust Behind the Couch

temp-post-image

Do you remember the last time you vacuumed behind your couch, or under your bed, or in the nooks and crannies around your refrigerator? If you’re like most people, it’s been a while -- maybe not since you moved in, or had a major home renovation or repair. The thing is, no one sees these dark corners and hidden spots (until you move out), and so even though you are, in the back of your mind, well aware of the dust collecting in other-worldly amounts under your bed, you permit yourself not to clean it up.

But just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there. That’s a clear statement of the obvious, but it’s indicative of a way of thinking that guides the common behavior of keeping our publicly visible areas clean while we let dust and grime gather in our metaphorical corners. Be it integrity of character, personal care, lifestyle habits, house cleaning, or anything else, the threads are all connected. And if you can’t bring yourself to the simple task of moving the couch when you vacuum, how deep will you be willing to go when the task at hand is actually hard?
