If you take a look at conventional medicine, it operates primarily in a small area around the threshold of clinical and sub-clinical. If we were to state this graphically, it would look something like this:
well .......................................................... unwell .............................................................. sick/injured ......................................................... dead
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------|
Conventional medicine specializes in the area that stretches from “sick/injured” to “dead,” and doesn’t operate much to the left of that threshold. Make no mistake, I am in no way casting aspersions on our medical practices or technology. Modern medicine does quite well at what it does, but we should understand where our individual duties lie, and guard ourselves against the error of mistaking our location on the wellness continuum.
The unfortunate reality is that most people in our society spend their life living just to the left of “sick/injured.” When something crosses the threshold, they seek medical intervention (a visit to the orthopedist, a course of pain medication, a stay in the hospital), and when conventional medicine has done its job and returned the patient back to the other side of the “sick/injured” threshold, they are sent on their way.
While this is the common way to exist, I’ll interject my opinion here and say that it is not the right way to exist. A nation always on the brink of war is not a productive or happy nation, and living your life knocking at the threshold of sick and injured is no way to thrive.
Our targets are set on getting ourselves as far away from that threshold as possible. If we use the metaphor of the straw that broke the camel’s back, most people live just a few strands of straw away from the threshold. We want to develop wellness that lets you take on a few full size bales of straw before your back gives way. Remember, your doctor can suggest that you eat your broccoli and get some exercise, but she can’t make that decisions for you. It’s on you to develop your wellness and move yourself far away from the threshold, and we’d love to help you.
